A bookshop and reading room with coffee, built for hard conversations — named after the elders who spin coffee, ideas and cotton together.
Ethiopian elderly women — DoBerti in Amharic and Afan Oromo — call on each other daily for coffee, carrying their cotton and their spinners with them. Over the ceremony they pray for their families and their country, work through what is going on around them, and share whatever they have. They use the time twice: they spin cotton and ideas at once.
That is the niche we want to build. Paris has Café de Flore, Les Deux Magots and Marc Sautet's Café Philosophique — coffee houses that became the places where things got argued out. DoBerti Café is a bookshop and reading room with coffee and events, where the subjects are the hard ones: societal problems, philosophy, law and politics, science and health, and art.
The project is half-way through brand development, in collaboration with the other departments.
